Description
RUT950 4G Router from Teltonika is a great value embedded 4G router. The Teltonika RUT950 is classified as an M2M router because it has several features that ensure the 4G connection is stable and the router can reconnect to the 4G service if if gets disconnected by the mobile network provider. This makes the RUT950 router ideal for remote access and monitoring applications such as CCTV, Car Parks Ticket machines and vending machines.
The Teltonika RUT950 is a dual SIM 4G router which means that it has two SIM card slots so you can insert two 4G SIM Cards, however the router only has a single 4G modem so it can only use one of these SIM cards at a time. The reason for adding a second SIM card is for added resilience. For example if your primary SIM card is EE and the EE network goes down then the RUT950 router can switch to the backup SIM card which may be on O2.
The RUT950 has 4 x Ethernet Ports for wired LAN connectivity, so you can connect your CCTV NVR directly to the router with an Ethernet cable for example. It also has built-in 802.11B/G/N WiFi so you can connect devices wirelessly. Many users will just use the WiFi connection for initial configuration nd is handy becuase if the installation engineer does not have access to a PC with an Ethernet socket then he can connect wirelessly to the router to provide the configuration or if the RUT950 is installed inside a weatherproof box for an outdoor 4G router installation or perhaps installed inside a locked room or data cabinet the engineer on site can still connect wirelessly to the router. The WiFi can be disabled if not required to help provide extra security for the router.
In many cases the Teltonika Router is used for remote access to the connected devices so will usually need to use a Fixed IP SIM Card. This is a SIM card service that provides the connection with a fixed IP address, usually a public IP address so the router and connected devices can be access from anywhere on the Internet. Of course the RUT950 has a firewall and built-in security features to prevent unauthorised access to the router, but your connected devices will also be open to the Internet so you should insure that you have used all the security features available on your connected devices to prevent unauthorised access. You can also get a Fixed IP SIM card with a private IP address, this means that the router is not accessible to the public Internet so in order to connect to your RUT950 and connected devices you will first need to create a VPN from your PC to your Fixed IP SIM card provider and once you are connected to them you will be able to access your router and connected devices.
